BHM SPOTLIGHT #3: MARCUS KWAME —Illustrator & Fine Artist

Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in Upstate NY, Marcus Kwame often incorporates social commentary into his artwork. “Much of my work is a representation of the beauty and diversity of the African Diaspora; the arts can be a powerful vehicle for change,” states Kwame, the co-creator of the comic book series Snow Daze. His illustrations include stories in Action Lab's Cash and Carrie, F.O.R.C.E., and the recently published graphic novel, The Black Panther Party.

Speaking of his recent exhibit, “Formerly Invisible,” at the Spring Street Gallery, Kwame shares that his “work is a celebration of Black people. It is a celebration of our refusal to accept invisibility as our status. We don’t beg for approval. We shine. We teach. We reach. We assert. We exhort. We influence. We persist. We Love. We are beautiful.”

"The Black Panther Party: A Graphic Novel History,” by David Walker, illustrated by Marcus Kwame. Available at Northshire Bookstore.

RAVE, NY Times’ Ed Park — “[an] ambitious and informative graphic history, crisply illustrated by Marcus Kwame Anderson.”
