10:00am — Meet @ the Solomon Northup Commemorative Plaque
Corner of Congress Street & Broadway
Saratoga Springs, NY
Organized by :
SARATOGA EDUCATIONAL EQUITY NETWORK & C.R.E.A.T.E. COMMUNITY STUDIOS
Join teachers, students, and community members as we learn, create, and pledge to honor our complicated history.
Focusing on the Solomon Northup story, we'll have a short teach-in at the historical marker in front of the Visitors' Center, led by Rachel Seligman* of the Tang Museum, followed by activities in Congress Park:
C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios will be set up for people to imagine a memorial for Solomon Northup.
Teachers will be able to sign the pledge to "teach truth" — based on the Zinn Education Project's model.
MLK Saratoga’s OURstory Treasure Hunt maps will be available.
Printed materials and a special QR code will be available for people wanting to explore other resources in Saratoga Spring.
*Rachel Seligman organized a traveling exhibition based on Northup in 1999. Her collaboration with Clifford Brown and David Fiske led to the designation of the historical marker and the publication of Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave (2019), which came out right before “Twelve Years a Slave “ was produced as a movie.
